The humanity of dance

By Ashley Thursby

Program Manager + Louisville Ballet Company Artist

Our Partnering Workshop participants enjoyed three weekends of learning the fundamentals of ballet partnering, led by myself alongside Company Artist Daniel Scofield.

Throughout the workshop, dancers shifted between leader and follower roles and had the opportunity to work with different partners. This encouraged everyone to observe, react, communicate, and engage in meaningful discussion throughout the process.

Upon reflection, the workshop became a beautiful lesson in the humanity of dance. Dance can feel incredibly vulnerable, particularly when we are physically connected with another person. Our workshop participants truly rose to the occasion through the thoughtful questions they asked, the openness they brought to each experience, and the dedication they gave to learning this new technique. Coming together as partners can teach us so much about how we then approach our own technique.

We always love having the opportunity to share through our specialty workshops, and hope that you will consider joining us for any of the upcoming 2027 offerings:

Winter Master Class: January 5-8
Variations Workshop: January 31, February 7, February 14
Summer Intensive: May 31-June 5

In the weeks ahead, SAVE THE DATE for:

1. Frankenstein: October 30-31 at The Brown Theatre

2. CLASS LOCATION SHIFTS TO ST. MATTHEWS: January 31

3. CLASS CANCELLATIONS: September 7, November 25-29

Congratulations to our Partnering Workshop Participants!

Participants reflected on their experiences, emphasizing the deepened awareness they gained through nonverbal communication, which they recognized as being just as meaningful as verbal communication.
