Warming up

By Ashley Thursby

Program Manager + Louisville Ballet Company Artist

While it is important to always have a pre-class routine, it can be especially beneficial during the colder months!

A proper warm-up helps increase blood flow and prepares your muscles for the movements you will perform in class. As a starting point, try the following three exercises to get your body ready to dance:

1. Side-Lying Clam Shells to strengthen and stabilize

Lie on your side with your knees bent and your feet together. Keeping your feet touching, slowly lift your top knee and lower it back down with control. Repeat on both sides.

Benefits: Activates the gluteal and hip muscles, helping improve hip stability, pelvic control, and alignment for dance movements.

2. Gentle Ab Curls to engage core

Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Gently engage your abdominal muscles and lift your head and shoulders slightly off the floor. Slowly lower back down, keeping the movement controlled.

Benefits: Activates the abdominal muscles, helping support posture, balance, and core stability throughout class.

3. March or Jog in Place to get your blood pumping

Begin by marching gently in place, lifting your knees comfortably and swinging your arms naturally. If appropriate, progress to a light jog to gradually raise your heart rate.

Benefits: Increases heart rate, promotes blood circulation, and raises body temperature to prepare your muscles for more active dance movements.
