Listening to your body

By Ashley Thursby

Program Manager + Louisville Ballet Company Artist

One of the greatest benefits we have as adult dancers is the ability to listen to our bodies.

We have learned to recognize the difference between a healthy challenge and a warning sign, how to honor our limits, and when to adjust if something doesn’t feel right.

I love witnessing this autonomy during our drop-in offerings, and I hope that you all feel the agency to act on your instincts as you move through our offerings.

One of the biggest questions I receive is, “When am I ready to move up a level?” My answer is usually two-fold, as there are both technical and personal considerations.

Technically, you want to feel that the majority of the material in your current level has become familiar enough that you can execute it with confidence, while still being challenged. In fact, you don’t need to have mastered everything before moving on. Growth happens when we give ourselves room to be both capable and curious.

Personally, you want to feel ready to take on a new challenge. Moving up a level should feel exciting, even if it also feels a little intimidating. It’s okay to have moments where you feel like the new material is hard. But you should also feel empowered to step back, modify, or return to a familiar level when your body or your instincts tell you that you need to.
